O Music! Word of God first known! First good,
your colours challenge all the gems in stone;
distractions, they; before you, kings have stood.
You paint intangibles; our depths, do own.
Is not your sapphire hue a major key?
Where floats the em’rald leaf, in summer’s breeze,
but perfectly in that warm, friendly “G”?
Your tones are, to the soul, such vital ease.
What lustre has the ruby, in its fire,
comparing with the crimson, sharpened “F”?
You range from love to burst of righteous ire;
in short: all life, arrayed in note and clef.
When even Light was yet to be, in God’s
triadic harmony was Heaven’s Lauds.
